Hello,
I am novice  detailing the steel structures for power house structure of hydropower project. By experience i can deliver the built up beam, columns etc..But i am in confusion in detailing connections between various components like beam to column flange /web ..side girts with column ...etc. I have only been given drawings which indicates the built up section details but not the connectors.
How should i look into this or any related document (if can be shared ) will be highly appreciated.
Thank you

Dear   Er. Santosh ,

In US we use  AISC  DETAILING  MANUAL for detailing . Try that .

Detailing for Steel Construction, 3rd Ed. (Digital)
This item is a PDF download of the 3rd Edition of Detailing for Steel Construction, which covers structural steel detailing conventions. It is keyed to ANSI/AISC 360-05, Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, and ANSI/AISC 341-05, Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings. Topics include:
general fabrication requirements
contract documents
common connection details
basic detailing conventions
project setup and control
erection drawings
shop drawings
bills of materials
detailing quality control and assurance
Publication Date: 2009

Go to AISC Web-Site and purchase the most current  AISC  Detailing Manual .

Regards.

Pls check whether connection design is in your responsibility or not?

Dear Pullikal Sir,
The drawings they have provided contains no details of such.But the technical spec says;
Unless otherwise indicated , Contractor shall design, detail and fabricate connections for the entire supply to resist the forces indicated in the drawings as per AISC Manual .
Field connections be provided with High strength bolts of minimum 19 mm dia bolts but respecting the structural forces in the connections.

the only force mentioned is Fy=300 N/mm2 for roof trusses ,,columns ,, girts etc ...

Kindly suggest me .
thnnks

Engr . Pulikal,
Many thanks on POINTING  OUT  " RESPONSIBILITY OF  CONNECTION DESIGN " . I missed it in my post and just talk about only AISC  DETAILING MANUAL . .
50%  of all STRUCTURAL FAILURES  IN THE WORLD ( Including USA ) are due  to inadequate or poor connection design.

Responsibility of DESIGN OF STEEL CONNECTIONS IS  50 % of the total man hrs of the Structural Man hrs on the project. How can any one DETAIL  STEEL  CONNECTIONS if they have not already designed one by one by taking DESIGN  FORCES from your final design computer run . If not done right , structure will fail,  for sure and we will KILL PEOPLE .

We have discussed RESPONSIBILITY OF STEEL CONNECTIION DESIGN based on AISC CODE several times in SEFI posts . Just pull that out and read that part of the code.

Thanks again .

Regards.

Dear Pandya Sir

Thanks for highlighting the seriousness of "DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY OF CONNECTION DESIGN"

Dear Santhosh

It seems, you don't have adequate informations in the design drawings. You need member forces from the structural analysis. Further you need thorough understanding of welded and bolted connection design as per AISC. Also your connection design need to be cross checked by a competent structural engineer.

AISC has published many design guides for connection design

AISC design guide -1 is for base plate anchor rod design
AISC design guide - 4 is Extended end plate connection design
AISC design guide - 16 is for various types of end plate connections
AISC design guide - 21 is for welded connections
