Dear Respected Prof. S.K. Jain Sir, Prof. Durgesh Rai Sir and Dr. N. Subramanian Sir,
It is a very welcome step that IIT Gandhinagar has prepared the draft of proposed modifications and commentary on IS 1893 Part 1: 2016 and IS 13920: 2016 along with illustrative examples. However, it is noted that some of the provisions in the proposed modifications in IS 13920: 2016 have been kept the same though papers have been published pointing some of the conceptual deficiencies on the codal formulas.
In this regard, I would particularly draw your attention to the paper authored by Rohit, Narahari, Jaiswal and Murty titled " Superposition principle invalid in IS 13920 design of slender RC Walls with boundary element" wherein the authors have pointed that the IS 13920: 1993 formula (Clause 9.4.2) assumed that the "moment capacity of a RC Structural wall with boundary elements is the sum of moment capacity of the web portion of the wall and that due to the couple using axial capacity of the boundary elements and the lever arm between them" and this leads to the overestimation of moment of resistance of RC wall with boundary element. While this assumption was removed in IS 13920: 2016, it appears that the proposed modification will again retain the same. In IS 13920: 2016, it was written that principle of mechanics should be used to get the moment of resistance of RC wall with boundary elements but no clear cut steps were given on how to do it I therefore requested all respected sirs to clarify this important issue. with regards,
Aditya. |
