Dear Sefinians,

can someone please enlighten on the Analysis and Design of Bunkers which are used ofr Radiation purpose.

Is there any special requirements to be considered in the Design?

I undersatnd that:-

1. Wall and Floor Thickness of approx 1500mm to 2000mm or above is required for shielding purpose

2. The thickness of wall and floor is a requirement from the Physisist or Radiologist who calculates the emission of radiation and its half life etc.

3. Would the above thickness have any implication on the structure?

Since the wall thickess are such large the reinforcement requirement would be bare minimum sa 0.4%.

Kindly advise if above undersatnign and is coorect and if someone has encountered these bunkers.

Dear Sir,

This type of structures requires detailed FEM analysis for stress, strain, vibration due to vehicles, earthquake, wind load etc. After evaluating these this reinforcement to be provided as per requirements. High end analysis techniques are required for these types of structures.

Dear Sir,

Depending upon the radiation level, the client may specify heavy concrete (made with iron ore or even steel shot as coarse aggregate). Depending upon the type of structure, seismic loads to be considered may be extremely high, and blast load or other accidental load (Main Steam Line Break / Loss Of Coolant Accident) may have to be considered. This can result in very heavy reinforcement even in spite of thick sections.
