An article by Anup D Shirhatti dtd.31.08.2021

There is a saying that the highest achiever is the traveller who has completed his journey. Transportation engineering is a beautiful field, in india we have enabled lakhs of Km road and maintainance and upgrading of roads is common practice. There are lots of learnings to life from civil engineering.
First there is an origin  and destination, the most important thing as in life is there are multiple paths and usually shortest path need not be the economical or feasible point. Just like in life there are obligatory points like Temples, Hospital, Schools ,etc so our path to our destination must be such that the destination. In life even though our destination is success we need to spare time to include family, friends, society and country as obligatory points.
Generally the route depends on profile, topography and obstacles. If our destination is top of a hill we generally see that all roads take a spiral path such that the slope does not exceed hauling capacity of  vehicle. In life also if our ambitionsare  high so is our plan to achieve should be tailored to our capacities. Just as in olympics it is possible to run 100m in 10 seconds but it requirs more than half an hour to run 10 km so think long term.
There are other obstacles like streams passing through our path ,there is a strong current but sometimes you have to construct a culvert. Timing has to be right as all problems cannot be solved we have to wait till the intensity of problem is minimum. Similarly curves are really important sometimes may be we may have to take a reverse curve but we should not l  lose our sense of direction.
Finally just like camber and cross drains  and surface drains are provided to road to drain of excess water from road. But these are really important to reduce the detoriation of road. We should also practise meditation, healthy food and exercise so that on reaching of our destination we have the shape and geometry to celebrate the view from top.

TRANSPORTATION

TRANSPORTATION is the need of HUMANS  since times immemorial.  In order of basic human requirements , FOOD , CLOTHINGS ,& SHELTER , the transportation stands the next immediate. Early MAN lived in caves , but transportation was facilitated by animals  , boats , logs . Transport was accomplished traversing on narrow paths in hilly terrain , or by water way . Air transport was only a dream.

Transportation by Boats , Ships came into reality much earlier . Names of  famous sailors like COLUMBUS  and VASCO DE GAMMA are well known .

Wright Brothers strong zeal to fly became a reality and Air transportation took a shape .

ROADS , BRIDGES , FLYOVERS , PORTS , AIRFIELDS , AIRPORTS , are transportation sector works earmarked for engineers , especially Civil Engineers.

Just some translated  verse
I started from where , not aware ,
My life is on travel ,
I am lost in finding  some one,
But I am being searched by  else, other one.

(Mein challa kahan se khabar nahin ,
Ke safar mein hay meri zindagi
Mein hoon guum kisi ki talash mein
Mujhay dhoondta koi aurr hay.)
