In a simple lap joint with bolts. During calculation of solid plate strength , why we calculate solid plate strength based on ultimate rupture criteria .While we should use gross section yielding . Since in solid plate there is no question of rupture . All text book use the ultimate cretria for solid plate strength.pl. explain this . |

Being old timer designer ,,
For Lap joint
Plate is checked for direct tension on net area at x sec passing thru bolts,
Rupture of plate is to be checked in reference to edge distance of bolts, especially corner bolts |

Thanks sir, for reply
Actually i am asking about efficiency of joint. for efficiency we divide the strength of joint by solid plate strength. My question is that which formula/criteria should be used for calculation of solid plate strength. |
