Hello Sefians
I am looking for a mentor who can guide me in bridge engineering. My interest is in design of bridges. Though I have my experience in RCC and Structural steel buildings, I want to take myself further in infrastructure area and keep myself updated.
I will thankful if senior Sefians guide me in this venture.
Thanking you
Prashant.

Mentor

Already written about importance of mentor in field of Structures,,  in post titled 'Some general view'.

Bridge designing requires a continued 10 -15 yrs, minimum, attention on designs  , that too under mentor (Bridge expert) . Including site visits timr to time.

Mentors like Dr VK Raina,, Dr Mahesh Tandon have  trained many  Engineers in  Bridge designs and   now  Sri Alok Bhumik and some others are bridge experts who are consultants of this specialized field.

It is always better  for young budding engineers to join consultancy firm having such mentors at top. But for experienced person like you,, learning this bridge field will be faster, even if you contact such mentor on part time basis (considering yr own consultancy for rcc steel works of buildings) .

I gained s lot from Dr VK Raina while working for small duration in  Consultancy firm headed by him. It was in late seventies and Manual design era. His presentation of bridge designs was unique, even a fresher can follow ,  It was highly vivid and candid,
If some  one can get those manual designs from GILCON delhi,  it is a great treasurer for learning bridge designs which can easily be handled on computer working.

Just my views on mentor

Hello Vikramjeet Sir,

Thank you very much for the advice. I would appreciate it if you could guide me in beginning this venture. I will be obliged if you can take up the role to be my mentor in this venture. As a mentor, I shall require your guidance.
Where can I start? Which are the books and codes that I should read to have a basic knowledge?
I look forward to receiving your reply on this.

Thanking you
Prashant.

Codes :-  Codes of IRC

- Especially  for structure designs
IRC-6  On Loadings
IRC 78 - For foundations and substructures
IRC 21 - For RCC designs  , Super structures
IRC 18- Prestressed concrete
IRC SP 33 supplemeyal measures

IRC , SP-13  Ready designs for small bridges and culv er rts

Apart from that IRC has published ready drawings for RCC and Prestressed Bridges  ,  dkew slabs,

Please go thru full list of IRC Publications to know what is available

But for inhouse designs, the 4 nod IRC codes list above needs to bd studied while attempting for detail designs.

To be continued - -

Bridge designs of Foundation and substructures ,, Bearings  ,,were carried for following cases :-

A) Normal Conditions (Non seismic)

Maximum LL Case

Minimum LL case
No Live load Case

B) Seismic L - L (along longitudinal dir)
Maximum LL*Case

Minimum LL *case
No Live load Case

C) Seismic T -T (along  Transverse dir)
Maximum LL*Case

Minimum LL *case
No Live load Case

MaxLL /minimum LL depending on position of wheel loadings to have maximum reactions /minimum reactions
* Appropriate LL in seismic cases

In wind cases wind along diagonal direction becomes critical  , where Wind load is predominant, especially in steel Bridges

Also for Bridges over rivers, water bodies
Abouments, Piers are also attempted for following cares :-
Water at HFL
Water at LWL

Bridge designs by Victor John son

You can check for books on net,, for latest authors

I have given for authors whom we followed,, Dr VK Raina (my distant mentor)
But studied my professor 's book on Bridges by VN Vazirani at DCE ,,

Also followed other books as mentioned,  but for me Rain's Design Sheets at GILCON Delhi is best book
