Dear Sefians,

In the past 9 days we've had 5 bridges collapsing in Bihar, Partial collapse of T1 Delhi airport terminal, roof collapse of newly retrofitted Jabalpur support.

Foundation issues in Bihar are not unknown. So how come collapses keep happening? And airport roof collapses are unconscionable.

What do we as structural engineers do about this state of affairs??

Dear friends,
As we can see the videos of failure, cause of failure of Space frame structure  appears to  be poor joints with under designed  tension members /ties at top of space frame.
Wonder if structural  modelling with appropriate forces were taken considering all eventualities in load combinations.
With regards
Ananda

Dear Alpa,

Unfortunately, we keep facing this kind of embarrassing situation very frequently and we keep expressing our frustration and helplessness in this forum. It is time for us to seriously ponder as to what action we need to take and how we can best serve the future needs of the society? I think meeting the needs of our society will demand a paradigm shift in our approach, attitude and our behavior as structural engineers. We need to recognise the fact that these frequent structural failures are also reflective of our own incompetence. Are we prepared to accept this reality? Are we prepared to take measures to raise our own competence level?

About a year and a half back, IAStructE had launched a scheme for engineers desirous to excel in the field of structural engineering and recognise them, after due process, as 'Accredited Structural Engineer - IAStructE' (ASE-IAStructE). The accreditation process includes an interview to assess their professional work vis-à-vis the key attributes and a 07-hour examination in structural design. Similar accreditation process is available in IStructE, UK at a cost which is multiple times the cost at which IAStructE is offering. Unfortunately the response to this call so far is very discouraging. It shows that our structural engineering fraternity is not willing to come out of their comfort zone and take the extra effort to upgrade themselves. It does not matter whether one takes the IStructE, UK accreditation or IAStructE accreditation, but what is important is to upgrade one's knowledge base and become a rounded professional structural engineer with sensitivity to society and environment.

It is time for us to raise alarm on this issue. Together with Clients we will need to commit ourself to improve our working style and practice to create safer structures. We need to fearlessly report failures so that we can learn important lessons. We have a platform "CROSFALL", where we can fearlessly report about failures as we do not have to disclose names and identity of the project. Let us take some extra pains for the sake of society at large and for our own well being as structural engineers.

Best Wishes

Young  talented crowd moving to IT due to low pay in design and tough conditions in construction.

Mam,
Good morning.
As you were aware, all Major Projects are being Supervised, monitored and Quality Assuranc done by TPI (Third Party Inspectors)
1) At the very first, they (TPI) should be put into severe and thorough inquiry by Experts like Retired Engineers and Chartered Engineers of the same relevant field.
2) Also,  All the records of quality control measures observed during the construction phase need to be scrutinized.
3) Need to verify the Tender awarding process to ensure that the contract is awarded only to the competent and experienced company / person of the same field.
It means, to ensure that the BEC-Bid Evaluation Criteria is duly fulfilled.
4) Finally, inquiry need to ensure that the scrutiny and credibility of Both Structural Engineer and the Sub-Soil Investigation agency  performance in its due Diligence.
Regards,
Er. S. Gnanasekaran

Alpa,

It's crucial to note that having skilled engineers and contractors alone is not sufficient to effectively serve the nation.
The issue lies in the fact that irresponsible and inefficient government officials tend to focus solely on completing paperwork to create a false perception of cleanliness in records.
There's a pressing need to educate senior officials with a new curriculum that emphasizes national values rather than perpetuating the outdated legacy left by the British 75 years ago. Failing to do so will have a negative impact on future generations.
Despite the soundness of our constitution, many laws imposed by the British still remain in force today, leading to distress and frustration due to their historical errors. It's important to address these issues as soon as possible to prevent potential negative consequences in the near future.

yes,its serious issue.department might have experienced engineers and design may be ok. seems joint failure of varios technical steps during execution. space frame joint life also to be re established. govt must ask iit and sefian for research about failure .From: forum@sefindia.org

Dear Friends,
The recent structural failures are indeed concerning, and I agree that the forum must address these issues. Thanks to Er. Alpa Sheth to initiate a dedicated discussion thread to delve into the root causes and viable solutions.
Here I think it's high time to give prime importance to the structural aspect & their maintenance rather than Aesthetics.
regards,
