PostPosted: Thu Apr 17, 2008 2:49 am    Post subject: Tips for Better Forum Experience at SEFI Reply with quote

Dear Members

If you conform to the following guidelines it will go a long way to ensuring a pleasant and positive experience for all.....PLEASE:

Some tips to keep message board clean,

1. DO Not post long quoted messages. Please remove quoted messages before you post reply via Email. If you are replying to certain topic, keep the subject same so it gets tied with existing discussion. Avoid posting long long SIGNATURES because at message in that discussion thread grows 30% to 50% of the whole discussion is filled by quoted messages repeatedly and signatures, not good for readability.

2. If posting a new topic please use a new message with appropriate subject very clear and specific indeed.

3. Now Sefi Supports Rich Formatting options. See example image below. If your message window shows this then you can use it. For example

4. If you would like to format your messages please use Web based forum than posting via Email.

5. Before making a post please search on web based forum to see any existing discussions there. If they exist join them and continue, if not create a new topic.

6. During difficulties contact us using Contact Live Link on SEFI Home Page. One of the volunteers may help you with your question about site and forum usage. Live Chat help is not a call center facility. Its volunteered by members of this forum to help other members. Be polite with the person available on chat as expected from an professional dealing with a professional. If any of you would like to contribute your time by making yourself available for live chat, please let us know.

7. Be sure to set your messaging preferences.

8. Do not have one line replies,

Like
--Thanks You--
--Yes I do agree.--

Remember messages goes to thousands of members and sending such one line causal message does not make sense. Instead use Thank Topic Button like this ..

9. Always spell check and re-read what you are posting and make sure its correct and readable and makes sense and not in Chat or SMS type of language.

Some guidelines for new members

    * Make your questions (and responses) as clear and intelligible as possible. If English is your native language then please use punctuation and well structured sentences to whatever extent possible. It is easier to read and understand your problem (and solution) if it's.... well, if it's easier to read. If English is not your native language, then just do the best you can. We'll figure it out. Keep the questions short and to the point, avoiding "stories" as much as possible.
    * Avoid "chat lingo" & shorthand for the same reason as above. Some of us find it easier to read actual words and sentences than to try to figure out what SMS abbreviations stand for.
    * Please give your post a relevant topic subject. Topics titled "Please Help" don't attract as much attention from our regulars as something more descriptive.
    * Do not post new problems on someone else's thread. That's called hijacking. Aside from being rude, your question may get lost in the shuffle.
conversations in someone else's thread. Again, it's not polite.
    * Use our internal forum search function. Most questions have been asked and answered already and it's very likely you can save yourself some time (and pick up a few good ideas) by going through related threads.
    * If you don't know the answer to a posted problem or have nothing intelligent or helpful to contribute, please don't post in that thread. Unlike other "similar" support sites, we pride ourselves on trying to "get it right" the first time and to avoid answers such as: reformat (that may prove to be the only solution, but it won't be the first option we suggest unless it's clearly the only logical choice). Our primary goal is to help, not to further confuse [Smile] .
    * Try to post questions in the appropriate forum. Moderators will move them if needed, but it's easier for all concerned if they are where they belong in the first place.
    * Do not contact forum staff by Private Messenger or Email to ask a technical question. All such questions should be posted on the forum. We will not respond to questions posed "off line".
    * When you get an error message you might want to write it down and search the exact message with Google... you may be suprised with what you find. You can also post that same exact error message here so we can help resolve the problem.
    * Don't try to build your post count with "welcomes" or by replying to every comment in an Off Topic thread you start. Nobody likes that and we're hip to what you are doing anyway.
    * Please use standard size font when posting. All caps or large or small fonts or all bold or italic is not only hard to read, it's generally considered poor forum etiquette. For example, all caps is considered the equivalent of YELLING.
    * Of course foul language and rude behavior will not be tolerated. Neither will spam or advertising of any sort.
    * Also off limits are discussions of warez, cracks, or any illegal downloading of software and other related topics.
    * No advertising of products, services or web sites please.
    * Use common sense when posting. We are a public, global forum. We are frequented by people of all ages and nationalities. What you find humorous others may very well find crude or offensive. Keep in mind we are primarily a technical discussion forum.... people don't come here expecting to be be confronted with offensive material or language of any sort.
    * By all means we want you to enjoy yourselves here - just remember what SEFI is all about and try to conduct yourselves accordingly. Let's keep this the best support forum on the web.

This last one is strictly personal - from me to you. You are posting problems and asking complete strangers to solve them with no expectation of reward other than the satisfaction of knowing we helped. Hey - that's what we're here for and we're happy to do it. Still, as is the case with pretty much everything we do in life, an occasional "please" and "thank you" won't hurt and are really nice to hear.

Thank you for your time, see you online at SEFI.

Regards

Admin

PostPosted: Thu Apr 17, 2008 10:17 am    Post subject: Set your SEFI Message Preferences Reply with quote

Dear All,

SEFI mails can be received in various formats and frequencies allowing you to choose the one which best suits you. If you are not receiving SEFI mails please reply to this thread so we can check the reason. Yahoo users are currently not receiving mailing list messages due to delivery issues with Yahoo Servers. How ever please follow instructions give here (Click) to make sure you get SEFI discussion in inbox promptly.

1. Daily Digest
2. Weekly Digest
3. Individual Topic Notification
4. All mails from Mailing List

Formats:
HTML:
Quote:
If you like tabular format of topic wise collection of discussion and responses. Black and White with message excerpts and links to original posts you can use to read and reply via web.

Enhanced HTML:
Quote:
Colorful Nicely formatted discussion summary organized chronologically and topic wise and author wise.

Plain Text: If your email client doesn't support HTML, or you prefer to have text emails much like what you used to get in past.

You can set your messaging preferences such that its exactly what you need. Some times having too little mails or too much mails give unpleasant communication experience.

You can also decide at what hour of the day you want to receive digests whether daily or weekly and its format.

Follow this Link to Set your preferences for message digests.

Follow this link to set your mailing list preferences if you want to get all mails as soon as they are posted.

Or you can choose to receive Topic Notifications which is when you create or reply to a topic it automatically adds to your topic of interests and any replies made to this topic you get a notification about the same as soon as some member respond to it.

This can be set while posting a new topic or replying to topic from web.

One must avoid multiple notifications. For example if you have subscribed to mailing list it means you will automatically receive all emails  related to all topics. No other notification is needed. This will help your mailbox remain clean and organized.

Also since now we have web based interface for discussion which offer much better messaging experience like search and sort , BB Codes and personal messaging among members , see member profiles while participating and see the discussion history in one place related to a topic which helps in seeing what has already been discussed and stimulates ideas and urge to participate.

Please reply to this thread for any difficulties/questions regarding messaging and usage of new format. If you need to post a new topic via Email make sure you change the subject to your new subject and remove quoted message while replying to this email. Alternately send a fresh mail to general@sefindia.org and make sure you see best practices to forum participation given on this thread.

Thanks and Regards

Hello Admin

I am already subscribed to "General Discussion Forum" and yet I am not getting the mails.

Is it possible to check whether the posts are being mailed from SEFI portal to my mail address or not? A kind of test mail or something.

Please help.

Dear Admin

No. I did not get such notification.

In fact, earlier I was using my Yahoo mail id to interact on SEFI forum. When, due to certain modifications made on SEFI portal, mail delivery to my yahoo account was disturbed and I switched over to mail id of my own website.

But, still sometimes I receive general discussion forum mails in my Yahoo id (Not all the mails of general discussion) and that too once or twice a week.

So, I understand that though I have changed my mail id in my profile on SEFI, internally it is still holding my Yahoo mail id and that might be the reason for not receiving the mails.

Please sort out ASAP.

Regards.
