Hello:

A hinged support is one which gives reaction in both horizontal and vertical direction? That means at the location we have the hinged support there is no vertical translation nor any horizontal translation.Right?

But, the members of a truss are assumed to be connected by frictionless hinges.Right? But, there the hinge can translate vertically or horizontally.Right? But, this is contradictory to the assumption  in case of a hinged support as mentioned above???Why??
Please help!!

Dear Shankar,
This has reference to your query on hinged support and hinged joint of
a truss. One is a hinge which is supported and the other is not
supported. Since the hinge at a support is "fixed" to the support, it
would not allow any translation. At a "roller-hinge" end also we have
a hinge but it will allow translation in one direction isn't it?
Regards
Kalgal

The answer is also "Very Fundamental"

But the support can also sink and sway at the same time. Right?
Nothing is rigid, even the earth and the solar system is in motion.

The support is assumed to be rigid and hence the support displacements
are assumed as zero. If the support is not rigid and it sinks or sways
the magnitude of the sinking/swaying shall be considered in the
analysis of structure. The structure becomes indeterminate and
normally such structures are analysed using structural analysis
softwares.

The effect of earth or solar system moving is negligible on the
building structures both from the size and loads (which are due to
gravity) consideration.
