And this has been because of the democratic, inclusive and non- hierarchical model of SEFI. This is a big achievement for each one of us personally. It shows healthy interest in our country towards structural engineering. The diversity in subjects discussed has increased over the years. Some of the discussions are of exceptional quality. There is also a laudable tolerance in the group for accommodating the very banal comment alongwith the most insightful one.
Until now, we have a loyal group of three who pay Rs 20,000 per year and another member who pays Rs 10,000 p.a. Together, they are the backbone of SEFI funding without which we would have folded up a long time ago. Besides these four members, we have about 10-15 members paying between 2000-5000 per year. We have put up the list of contributors on the website. Pl take a moment to see the list. We thank all of these members alongwith those who have paid between Rs 500/ to Rs 2000/-. Your support is crucial for SEFI's survival.
We feel that as the benefits of SEFI are being enjoyed by one and all, it is not fair to burden the same members year on year to keep SEFI running. The expenses have in recent past skyrocketted due to increased subscribers requiring larger meory requirements. We also need to ugrade the server. Funding by the loyalists is not enough to sustain SEFI. We need more funds. URGENTLY. If each and every one of you decides to pay Rs 500/- each, we will build up adequate corpus from who's interest we can sustain SEFI and we will not time and again have to appeal for funds.
I hope all of you will rise to the occassion and donate generously. Rs 500/- is less than what you pay for your family to see a movie in the cinema hall - so let's see all of us for once setting our priorities right. If we donnot get the requisite donations, we may be constrained to bring in some restrictions and limit some of the privileges to paying members only. We do not wish to do it- and will not need to if we get sufficient funds. So please helpus to keep SEFI the way it has always been and the way we all love it.

Alpa Sheth

-- Regarding SEFI( As I know during on- line discussions these years)
Dear Sir
Er Debyan has already provided the information but to supplement further,
I think sefi, the Structural Engineering Forum of India, is a registered body
for on-line discussions on structural/civil engineering matters.
It is absolutely free and contribution offered are voluntary.
It was started by a group of three Engineers ,aftermath of Bhuj EQ
(they also interct in forum time to time)
namely Prof SK Jain , Madam Alpa Sheth and Mr Pankaj Gupta. They
have spent/spending lot of time and money for this noble cause and we
must be highly grateful to them as also to Mr Rajeev , Admin .
Presently 8500+ engineers on on - line discussions,
Some top Eminent sefi members with experience of over four / five decades
are Dr N Subramanian, Prof AR Chadrasekhar, Prof Ajit Bhattacharya,
Prof KG Bhatia, Sh UH Varyani , Sh Indrjeet Barua Sh Umesh Rao
and some more.
No Publications , since It is only a discussion forum.
Inception since Jan 2003, aftermath of Gujarat EQ
Purpose : On line Knowledge sharing in very frank and free environment
especially aimed for safe(though economical) design of structures,
construction problems etc.
Registration - - On line
Admin may kindly correct anything not spelt correctly.
best regards
vikramjeet
Dear Alpa
I do not anything about this forum. In fact I never heard of it even. Please inform me where its HQ is, when it has been established and who have established the forum. I am associated with many associations of structural engineers like IIBE, IABSE, ISET and IstructE-India. Nobody ever told me about SEFI. I have never come across any publication of this forum even. Please let me know procedures of registering membership. I shall become life member.
Dear Gautam Sir,
I don't know whether SEFI is a registered body or not...but the thing is it is a platform floated by the admins of this group (M/s Alpa Sheth of VMS consultants and Mr Rajeev of Phoenix webtech are the ones I know of).
It is basically an online platform for technical discussions amongst fellow engineers usually regarding to structural engineering, site related problems etc. It is also a tool to share the problems faced by engineers and the solutions provided by engineers who have encountered similar problems before.
It is a non-hierarchical group. No one is president, no one is treasurer, no one is general secretary etc.
It is a online platform for two way discussions amongst fellow engineers.
SEFI as a group have not published papers simply because it is a collection of individuals and does not represent anybody. Though I might add that some of the best brains in this country who have written countless research papers are part of this group.
The contribution demanded is voluntary and not a 'Membership Fee' or 'Registration fee' as demanded by some of the groups that you have mentioned.
SEFI is a group which uses the power of the internet for maximum benefit of its members with regards to enhancing their professional knowledge at virtually no material costs.
Hope I have been able to give my views clearly.
Regards,
Debayan

Dear Colleagues:
Greetings on the Republic Day. Today also happens to be sixth anniversary of the launching of SEFI, and eighth anniversary of the terrible earthquake in Gujarat.
This past year has truly been a year of revival of SEFI. Alpa Sheth had the wisdom to enthuse a young civil engineering graduate of IIT Kanpur, Sanjeev Kumar to take up the responsibility of managing the SEFI site. And, what Sanjeev and his colleagues at Phoenix Webtech Pvt Ltd have achieved in the last eight months has been nothing less than wonderful. We all are today enjoying a much better and more vibrant Forum thanks to the proactive efforts and dedication of Sanjeev.
The statistics speak loud and clear on this revival of our Forum: we were 1,798 members last year on this day, and today our number stands at 3,444! In fact, last night, I asked Sanjeev tough questions to ensure that these numbers are not inflated by accident, since the growth of our membership has been unbelievably fast in these months.
We have made huge progress in structural engineering practice in the last six years, and some of it is clearly a contribution of SEFI. Some of the issues that come up on the Forum have been enlightening to members regardless of their age and experience. However, a lot remains to be done. It is true that India has some of the most enlightened structural engineers and some of our firms are doing world-class work. However, we must recognize frankly that the average level of structural engineering practice in our country is far behind that in the developed countries with which India aspires to compete. For too long, we have taken shelter in the fact that we are a poor or a developing country, and we need to come out of that mental block.
It is in this context that SEFI will have a huge role to play in the years ahead: to help build capacity of our young engineers and to hold their hand, to discuss and debate the issues that affect the general practice, to push for improvements of our codes.
We also take this opportunity to thank our Subscribing Members for their financial support without which this Forum will not be able to function. You may visit http://www.sefindia.org/?q=node/12 to see the 28 individuals and firms that have contributed a total of about Rs 1.46 lakhs this year. We hope many more of our members will contribute financially in the year ahead. For those new on the Forum, members are encouraged to voluntarily contribute a sum in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 20,000 per year.
Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community, and with best regards,
Sudhir Jain

Dear Madam
I fully agree with you and paying Rs.500 per member is a least thing a member can do for sustaining SEFI. I request you to kindly elborate the manner in which the payment may be made. This will facilitate the members to contribute and sustain this forum.
Thanks & Regards
