Hello all,

See attached figure.

Here, some of the secondary beams are horizontal and some vertical.

My question is:

What is the criteria behind this? When should the secondary beams be vertical and when horizontal?

Any code  rules/references will be useful.

Dear Sefian,

The secondary beams are mainly provided to support the equipments/pumps or the gratings/chequered plates etc.,
The spacing and the direction are also governed by the same. In general for spanning the grating the spacing between the beams shall not exceed 1.2m c/c. If you exceed this span then you may have to go for next higher level grating.
Similarily for chequered plate also it is having some span constraint based on the thickness of chequered plate used and the loadings.
Its purely Engineers choice to arrange the secondary beams provided above are the constraints or which decides the arrangement.

System is symmetrical about axis joining J - 10.

Good arrangement. Less fabrication details.

I did not follow the term 'next high level gratiing'.

What do you mean by next high level grating?

Dear Er Vishal

Secondary beams
From the appended sketch:
The building has two blocks of similar size configuration and arrangement placed  
orthogonal to each other.That is why secondary beams seem along X axis in one Block  
and along Y axis in other Block.
Secondary beams are required to be introduced if rcc panels are large sized.
Providing large sized solid slab panels will consume heavy steel. Secondary beams reduce
the steel consumption.The concrete quatty may come at par including extra shuttering cost.

Secondary beams are provided resting on main beams.If functional needs donot  
dictate, these are provided along short span of panel to break longer dimension
into smaller panels.

Provision of sec beams in industrial buildings is nicely explained by
Er G.Parathasarthy.

Vishal,

Next higher level means, higher thickness grating.
Generally
25mm thick span for 1.2mc/c
30mm thick can span more than 1.2m etc.,

similarily
6 thick Chequered plate can span for 1m c/c
8 thick means it can span more

But all depends on the loading intensity and the allowable deflection criteria etc.,
