While designing RCC box culvert, I observe that the provided
reinforcement quantity is much higher than required quantity.
Please guide me to adopt optimum quantity of reinforcement.

Design of Box Culvert and quantity of rebars varies for 2D or 3D Analysis. It should be analysed for 3D. Moments in Haunches of Box governs its Design. Sufficient thickness of haunches should be provided in order to counteract the highest moments in that portion.

Sir,

The box culvert in question is for storm water drainage purpose with depth upto 2 m and width 1.5 m . Now the section provided is 250 mm thick on side and bottom/top. The Ast required as per moment requirement considering IRC loading is coming less but provided steel

of 150 mm c/c is approx double of Ast required. Could you please explain the governing factor for such high quantity of provided steel.
