UNL IS THE UNSUPPORTED LENGTH, WHICH IS GIVEN AS COMMAND  TO COLUMNS,
IN THE STAAD ANALYSIS PARTICULARLY IN STEEL STRUCTURES.

Dear Sefian,

UNL (unsupported length) parameter is given in STAAD to design the steel member for the lateral buckling of compression flange.
It is used in the design of column and beams.
The UNL length given will considered as Length for the compression flange and it will check the compresssion flange alone for L/r accordingly the permissible stress of the whole beam or column member is fixed. If this stress is governing.

Generally the long beams without the restrain of top flange or intermediate beams tieing in plan, the allowable stress of compression flange will be governing.
This can be reduced by providing intermediate tie beams and bracings to break the minor axis length of the beam and UNL in the minor direction.

I hope it is clear now.
