SOFT STORY : IS A COLUMN BEAM ( FRAMED )STRUCTURE  WITHOUT INFILLED WALLS , MANY OF THE BUILDINGS  WERE COLLAPSED IN GUJRAT EARTH QUAKE DUE TO SOFT STORY.

The column of soft storey meant for car parking  has to be designed for  2.5 times the actual column design moment as per IS 1893-2002 Part 1. Suppose if the building is covered by 3 sides of wall and one side open,  is it mandatory to multiply the column moment by 2.5 times. Experts  kindly comment on this as per codal provision.

IS:1893, Cl.4.20:- "Soft Storey: It is one in which the lateral stiffness is less than 70 percent of that in the storey above or less than 80 percent of the average lateral stiffness of the three storeys above."

That's the definition. Hope it's clear

dear sir i want to cunfirm about below warning in staad out put
if any analysis of building showing warning of soft storey than v can accept it by designing column by 2.5 factor...or we must make the structure non soft story by increasing stiffness

For soft storey and weak storey you can refer IS1893 2002 Part I clause 4.20 and 4.25 for definition

But in case of actual practice that is not posible it genrally vary from zone to zone.genarally in the earthquake
zone III that reinfocement in soft storey is same through the upaward column.

Fig 4A to 4E on page 21 and 22 of IS 1893 (Part 1): 2002 has mentioned it in very much detail.
